Summary: Laetitia Conard, after graduating from Smith College and then obtaining her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, helped found the discipline of sociology at Grinnell College. Conard then became active in socialist politics, running for governor in 1932, Congress in 1934, and Senate in 1936, and lieutenant-governor in 1940. While she lost all these races, she was the first woman to stand for election in each position. She was the spouse of Henry S. Conard.
