Drake Library Archive Digital File Name: Grinnell Stories/2017-02-07 Japanese Americans Come to War-time Grinnell

Summary: After Executive Order 9066 instituted the internment of 120,000 Japanese Americans, Grinnell College helped arrange for about fifteen nisei (second generation, American-born Japanese) to study at Grinnell and thus avoid internment. Professor Henry Conrad was instrumental in this effort, and among the first Japanese-American students were Barbara Takahashi, William Kiyasu, and Akiko Hosoi. Kaiser also explores the relationship between these students, their peers, and the wider Grinnell community.
