Summary: Roberts and Elisabete Lapainis, along with their son Egils, immigrated to the United States as refugees from Latvia under the Displaced Persons Act of 1948. The family settled in Grinnell around 1950 before moving on to Cedar Rapids. There, Elisabete taught piano as a part of the Iowa Music Teachers Association, and Roberts worked as an electrician.
