Summary: Kaiser compares the common occupation for the 1482 Grinnell residents in 1870 with those of the 5219 Grinnell residents of 1940. Jobs in 1870 were concentrated in farming and artisan practices like carpentry; jobs in 1940 were concentrated around the railroads, manufacturing plants, automobiles, electricity, and telephone networks. Kaiser also compares the gender divide in jobs in each time period.
