Drake Library Archive Digital File Name: Grinnell Stories/2016-12-08 Iceman Romeo!

Summary: Grinnell ice hauler Alpha Bassett eloped with seventeen-year-old Wilma Wentzel in 1923, a time when an adulterer could be convicted and sent to prison for three years. After the Ku Klux Klan, on behalf of Wentzel’s parents, found the pair, Bassett was convicted and faced charges of adultery and seduction. Bassett then remarried after his release, and Wilma Wentzel also got on with her life.
