Drake Library Archive Digital File Name: Grinnell Stories/2020-09-01 Friendly Town comes to Grinnell

Summary: In the critical time of race relations in 1960s America, Grinnell and other rural towns hosted primarily African American and Latinx children from urban areas for two weeks as a part of “Friendly Town,” a Fresh Air program. Between three and 34 children visited each year between 1965 and 1968. Memories from both hosts and visiting children are sparse and varied; some hosts still communicated with their guests after their visits, one guest shoplifted from a local store, and no one asked the visiting children about problems with their hosts.
