Drake Library Archive Digital File Name: GrinnellStories/2021-02-28 That Time When A Convict Fell Out of the Sky…
Summary: Steven Barner, born in 1940, escaped from Fort Madison and stole a Cessna 182 airplane from the Fort Madison Airport in May of 1964 and crash-landed in Chester Township, northeast of Grinnell. After a medical discharge from the Air Force–where he did not learn to fly–court records show his criminal record, including the reason for his imprisonment in Fort Madison: breaking parole by stealing cases of empty beer bottles from Kalell’s Grocery and Market. His previous charges included theft and forgery. Barner was injured by the crash and found hours later by the land owner and his neighbors in an armed search for the escaped convict.
