Background Note: The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union of Grinnell, Iowa, was organized in December 1874 for the purpose of promoting abstinence from “alcoholic liquors” and tobacco products. Meetings were held on the 3rd Thursday of
month. The chapter sponsored lectures, the circulation of a temperance pledge, lobbying efforts, educational programs in the schools, and charitable projects in the Grinnell area.
