Background Note: The mission of Welcome Wagon is to greet new homeowners and acquaint them with their community and the products and services of local businesses. It was founded in 1928. The Grinnell telephone directory of 1953 contains the name and phone number of the Grinnell Welcome Wagon hostess, but the donated records are for the years indicated.

The Grinnell Club had activity groups to enable people to get to know each other. Meetings were held the first Thursday of the month at 8:00 pm at the American Legion. Programs of crafts, speakers, social dinners, children’s parties and bridge and 500 card “marathons” comprised the activities. Visits to newcomers were made by the Welcome Wagon hostess, who left brochures, coupons and gifts.
