Background Note: In March 1897, Mrs. Adelaide Ballard, president of the Iowa Suffrage Association, came to Grinnell for the purpose of organizing a political equality club. Although she initially met with little success, President Gates, president of Grinnell College, and his wife supported her efforts, and several women showed interest in forming an organization after she spoke at the Congregational Church.
The club was formed on March 15, 1897. Although its avowed purpose was the passage the 19th Amendment, the club also met to hear and discuss topics of interest and to interview candidates about women’s suffrage.
