Background Note: Grinnell’s first post office was established in 1856 and located in a frame building on the north side of Commercial Street. Prior to the construction of the present building, it was located in rented quarters in the 900 block of Main Street, and at this time, city delivery was established, adding to the service of seven rural routes.

Construction of the present post office was begun in 1916 and the building was dedicated in the fall of 1917.
