Background Note: Ruritan National began in Holland, Virginia, in 1928 with the objectives of encouraging community service and cooperating with other agencies and organizations to improve the community, with emphasis on education, health, and the environment.
The Grinnell Ruritan Club was organized on June 30, 1976. Among its projects were the organization of wrestling tournaments, the establishment of health clinics, and the awarding of scholarships to high school students. Donations were also given to local organizations and projects. Because of the difficulty of attracting a sufficient number of members, the club voted to disband in December 1997.
