Background Note: The Morrison Glove Factory was founded in 1856 by Frederick W. Morrison, who came to Grinnell from Bath, New Hampshire, where he had learned the tanning process. (His wife was a skilled glovemaker.) The business, which was Grinnell’s first manufacturing company, made harnesses, horse collars, and shoes as well as gloves. A. McIntosh bought ½ interest in the company in 1882 and E.C. Wadsworth in 1891. B.J. Ricker became a partner in 1895. After the factory was destroyed in the Grinnell fire of 1882, the partnership constructed a replacement on Broad St, which they occupied in 1896.
In 1924, G.S. Lannom began an association with the business, and the company introduced a line of sporting goods. The company continues to operate under the name of Delong Sportswear under the direction of the Lannom family. The manufacturing plant is now owned by Grinnell College, which has renovated it for office space.
