Background Note: Isabella Beaton was an accomplished and well-known pianist, composer, and piano teacher. Born in Grinnell in 1870, she graduated from Grinnell High School in 1887, and in 1890, graduated from the Conservatory of Music, Iowa College (in Grinnell). After returning from her study of music in Europe, she taught in the Cleveland School of Music. She continued to perform, and in 1903, received a Master of Arts degree from Western Reserve University’s Women’s College. In 1910, she opened the Beaton School of Music in Cleveland, Ohio. She died in 1929 and is buried at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Her folding, practice (silent) keyboard, which accompanied her around the world, can be seen at the Grinnell Historical Museum.
The collection comprises copies of research discoveries, news clippings, pamphlets, and national music magazines that featured Isabella Beaton on their front covers. Many more records relating to Isabella Beaton are housed in the archive at Burling Library, which received the bulk of items donated by Kay Carpenter Doyle, a living Beaton relative, in 2021.
