Background Note: Wilford S. Smiley was born in Malcom on Sept. 25, 1879. He attended local schools and graduated from Grinnell College in 1905, after which he obtained an MA from the University of Iowa and continued studies at the University of Chicago. After moving to Grinnell, he organized the Grinnell Federal Savings and Loan and served as first secretary. In 1936 he was appointed postmaster at the Grinnell post office and served until retirement in 1951. He died in 1960.

The collection consists of family correspondence, genealogical research, property and tax records and family photographs.  Most records relating to the 35th college reunion have been donated to the Iowa Room, Grinnell College
