Date(s)

  • 1929 -1953 (Creation)

Extent

Quantity: nine photographs and envelopes, plus accompanying material

Arrangement: in grey binder

Background Note: These nine, 2 ¾” x 4 ½” or 21/2” x 3 ½” black and white photographs
were donated in individual envelopes with descriptions of the trees, houses, and/or people associated with the trees. A Grinnell Herald article dated 10/18/1929 is included with the collection, along with two more articles (1949, 1952). Also included is a small booklet (7 ¾” x 9/2”) entitled “Historic Trees of Grinnell, Iowa” compiled by Mrs. F. R. Porter, Chairman of the Conservation Committee, Poweshiek Chapter D.A.R. The material was furnished by Miss Ada Park, who took the snapshots in 1934, and by Mrs. Emily Magoun Miller, who grew up in Grinnell.

In August of 2021, the original negatives of the photographs taken by Ada Park, a cousin of Isabella Beaton, were found in a donation of family letters, music, and other items belonging to Kay Doyle, a relative of Isabella Beaton. Most of the donation went to Grinnell College, but Ada Park’s negatives have been added to this collection.
