Background Note: Jim George was born in Burlington, Iowa and grew up in Cedar Rapids. He graduated from Coe College with a degree in journalism. After moving to Grinnell, his professional career included work for the Grinnell Herald-Register (1951-54); Montezuma Republican (1954-56); Grinnell College Public Relations Office (1956-60); and Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company (`1960-1991) where he was Public Relations Director and Advertising Manager. In 1985 he returned to Grinnell College to work in Sports Information. During the 1960s and 1970s he worked as a freelance photographer and journalist for the Des Moines Register, especially contributing material for their Sunday supplement.

Jim George’s papers include his photographs and articles published in brochures of Grinnell organizations and in various periodicals. The bulk of these materials are photocopies of articles and photographs published in the Des Moines Sunday Register from 1965-1973.
