Background Note: The Signal, a weekly newspaper, commenced publication in February 1882 with C.E. & R.E. Schoff of Illinois as publishers/editors. The paper espoused the views of the Greenback Party and prominently displayed the proceedings of the Grinnell national greenback club, of which the Schoffs were members. The cost of an annual subscription was $15.

The Schoffs proposed publishing the local news of the county and solicited news of townships, neighborhoods and friends of readers. They also promised “to promote the best interest and welfare of Grinnell” while avoiding “personalities as far as possible in discussion of political and other topics”.

The Signal is listed in the 1894 City Directory as the Independent Signal under the ownership of the Schoffs, but does not appear in the 1900 Directory.
