Background Note:
Margaret Kiesel and Laura Wieman were two of the five children born to Henry and Merta Matlack. (Henry Matlack was a member of the music faculty and administration at Grinnell College.)
Margaret, who was a graduate of Grinnell College, married Paul Kiesel in 1945 and lived in Excelsior MN and Marshalltown IA before returning to Grinnell in 1970. She was a writer and historian, active in the League of Women Voters, and in 1981 was named Feminist of the Year by the Grinnell Chapter of NOW. Margaret died in 1987.
Laura Wieman (b. 7/9/13), also a graduate of Grinnell College, married Henry N. Wieman in 1948. After returning to Grinnell from Geneseo IL in 1964, Laura worked as slide librarian at Grinnell College until 1985 and taught weaving from 1970 to 1996. She too was active in local organizations, including the League of Women Voters and United Nations. Laura died in 1997.
The collection was given to the library as part of a League of Women Voters file and documents the sequence of events involving the sale of the family home at 1510 East St., first by Merta Matlack to the Kiesels and subsequently by the Kiesels to the Wiemans. It includes correspondence between the sisters as well as deeds, mortgages, tax statements, and photographs of the house (originals stored in Miscellaneous Photographs Box #3)
