Summary: James Oscar (Jim) Tibbs, after serving in the U. S. Army, settled in Grinnell with his wife Mary Redrick, and their family grew to include six children. Tibbs worked a variety of jobs, including as a shoe-shine at Grinnell’s Sanitary Barber Shop where, as part of Grinnell’s small African American community in the 1920s, his white clients made discriminatory jokes at his expense. At the time this post was published, the chair was on display at Headquarters on Grinnell’s 4th Avenue. In 2020, the chair was donated to the Grinnell Historical Museum.
