Background Note: The organizational meeting of the Industrial School of Grinnell was held in January 1887 with the purpose of forming committees to seek pledges for the support of the school, find pupils, and acquire second-hand clothing. On March 30 a constitution was adopted, giving as the purpose of the school the promotion of the welfare of the girls of Grinnell by teaching sewing and cooking and training them to become “good useful women”. Secretary’s records continue until May 1907 when it was reported by Sarah Child that attendance was small but the work satisfactory. There is no indication that the school was being discontinued; it is not listed in the 1910 Grinnell City Directory.
According to a letter in the file for Dora Grinnell (pamphlet file), the school was discontinued when the Home Economics program was established at the high school.
