Background Note: Photographs belonging to the family of William Sparks Hodgdon (1884-1965) were donated by Susan K. Hathcock, William’s granddaughter. William’s father was Charles Green. Hodgdon, who came to Grinnell in 1872 and whose biographical history appears in The History of Poweshiek County, Iowa (Des Moines: Union Historical Company, Birdsall, Williams, & Co., 1880) on page 934. William Sparks Hodgdon was born and raised in Grinnell, and a number of photographs attest to his involvement as a young man in football and track. Information about the photographs was provided by Susan K. Hathcock.
