Summary: In the 50s and 60s, both the Grinnell community and Grinnell College were swept up in the trend of beauty pageants and other competitions for women popularized by the rise of television. Many women in Grinnell were judged on intellect, beauty, and pose, and were crowned homecoming queens and local pageant winners. The pageants died off due to lack of interest and changing social trends, including pushback from early feminist and women’s liberation groups.
