Summary: In the early 1940s, men from all over the country were enlisted to help build a long highway from the mainland to Alaska. Even though they were making only $2 an hour, many of the men marveled at the natural beauty in the mountains, and had positive interactions with the local Canadians. The project was stalled due to machinery problems, deaths and injuries, natural disasters and complications that came as a result of World War II. In the mid-40s the project was completed and the highway was used to transport military cargo during the war.
