Background Note: June 1, 1992 is the date given for the first meeting of the Mayflower Poetry Club. Leedice Kissane’s energy may well have been the catalyst that brought the Mayflower poets together as a group. The Poetry Club was loosely patterned after the structure of the Florida Poetry Club, which Alex Moffett introduced to the group. After discussion of format, members opted in favor of a forum where participants had an opportunity to share and appreciate poems by established authors as well as to give voice to their own works in a congenial group. Anthologies were published in 1993, 1996, and 2004. In 2009 the club published Celebration of Language and the Mayflower Poets, which was compiled by Dorothy Fyfe, who was also responsible for the preliminary organization of the club’s papers.
