Background Note:
JD’s opened in 1961 on the corner of 6th Ave and Broad, the location of the former White Spot sandwich shop. JD's was founded by Jack Dale Marcum, Gerald Philip Hagen, Bob Kaloupek and Bob Illingworth.
In 1962, the restaurant moved to its popular location on the second level of 922 ½ Main Street where it was purchased by Bob Globus. JD’s was in business for 35 years, spanning 1961 – 1996. The restaurant was known for its expansive drink menu and tongue-in-cheek menu items. Patrons remember the restaurant for its Delmonico steak, the special seasoning on the fries, JD’s lunch burgers, and the steep flight of stairs leading up to the restaurant.
For décor, Globus commissioned Grinnell artists Stan and Barbara Reid to paint a 4x10ft mural of historical Grinnell scenes and landmarks. The frame of the painting is made of clapboard from J.B. Grinnell’s farm. After the restaurant closed, the paining was preserved and is now on display at the Grinnell Historical Museum.
In 1996, Globus sold the restaurant to Paul and Kalyn Durr.
JD’s had a number of slogans over the years, including:
“Often challenged, never surpassed”
“Elevated at 922 ½ Main”
“Upstairs, downtown”
“One flight above the others”
“Step up to fine dining”
