Following his graduation from the University of Iowa Law School, he came to Grinnell and opened a law practice with Charles Vogel.
Ethel attended both Coe College and the University of Iowa, receiving a degree in Music, and she subsequently taught in the public schools before her marriage to Tommy in 1935. The couple had two children, John D. and Miriam (Freiter).
Both Tommy and Ethel were active in the Congregational Church and in various community organizations, and Tommy served as the governor of the Iowa/Nebraska District of Kiwanis International in 1939-1940. He was a delegate to the 1956 Republican Convention in San Francisco. He was also involved in the planning of the Mayflower Home.
