Summary: Kaiser investigates the life of Emma Morgan, one of the first African Americans in Grinnell, though not easily recognized through historical documents as such because of the lightness of her skin. Morgan was an enslaved child, probably adopted by Ephraim and Rachael Harris of Grinnell, and she then became a member of Grinnell’s Congregational Church. She was buried in Hazelwood Cemetary’s potter’s field, and her bible passed onto a fellow orphan, Alice Howard.
