Background Note: In 1901 S.A. Cravath, then the owner of the Grinnell Herald, prepared a sketch of his family’s history for his daughter, Myra Rew Cravath. Cravath was born on 9/27/1836 in Conneaut PA, attended Oberlin College and taught in Ohio. In 1860 he married Mary Raley and in 1863 began the study of medicine. In 1865 he moved to Mitchell, IA where he practiced medicine and edited the Mitchell County News. He came to Grinnell in1872 and acquired half- and eventually full interest in the Grinnell Herald.

The history includes a sketch written for the Herald in April 1900 and entitled, “The Herald: Its History, Appliances, Owners, Abodes, Associate Publications, etc.”, by S.A. Cravath.
