Summary: Born in Valdosta, Georgia, Gordon Henry Kitchen attended Grinnell under the Rosenwald Fund Plan. Kitchen was a good student, a speedy halfback for the football team, and a track speedster for the track team. He was the only Black student on both college teams. After graduating from Grinnell, Kitchen worked at Crocker Street YMCA, and in the physical education department of Talladega College. He was selected to go to Brownwood, Texas for USO- YMCA work.
