Background Note: The Hopeful Barracks Auxiliary of the National Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of World War I was organized on November 7, 1958, for the purpose of providing aid to World War I veterans in the area. The initial charter was acquired by the required number of ten members, but only a year later the chapter membership had increased to 75. Meetings were held on the second Monday of each month.

Over the years, the Auxiliary donated cookies, clothing, supplies, and funds to the Veterans’ Hospital in Iowa City and to the Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Due to a lack of active members, the group disbanded in April 1989, their charter was returned to the national organization, and remaining funds were sent to the Marshalltown home for canteen books.
