Background Note: Stephen and Theodotia Bartlett of New Hampshire emigrated with four of their five children to Grinnell in September 1854, attracted by the influence of Congregationalist principles in the new town. Their eldest son, Emery, who was to be the most prominent member of the family, married Hannah Stevens in 1855 and spent his first years farming until 1874, when he became involved in the butchering business. Emery built the first Bartlett home on Broad St. in 1854-55 and in 1889 built the second home on the same site. This home, which was sold by Emery's daughter Stella to Roy and Katherine Bates in December 1937. Located at 1012 Broad St. the front portion contained Bates Flowers.

The collection was compiled by Corey McIntosh, Grinnell College as an independent project under the direction of Jon Andelson, Professor of Anthropology.
