Background Note: The Social Service League was formed in 1912 after the agent of the Charity Organization Society, Miss M.N. Darnell, became ill. The Society proposed to the Poweshiek County Board of Supervisors that they hire a full-time, trained charity worker to help the poor of Grinnell and to serve other social needs. The proposal was accepted, and Adah Hopkins was hired. The Charity Organization Society then merged into the Social Service League to broaden the scope of the organization and to aid in supporting Adah Hopkins.
The records of the Social Service League of Grinnell contain annual reports, a scrapbook, monthly reports, financial information, and papers entitled, “Study of 25 years of Social Service”.
