Background Note: The Grinnell , Iowa Chapter of the American Red Cross, later known as the Poweshiek County Chapter, was founded on April 16, 1917. The Grinnell Chapter was granted a charter by the American Red Cross on May 19, 1917. The principal function of the chapter as expressed in the By-laws, was to respond “promptly and vigorously to any appeal by the National Red Cross in time of war or for those suffering from the effects of great calamity at home and abroad.” In addition, its purpose was to take prompt and active relief measures in the event of a serious local disaster. In 2001, the local chapter ceased to exist and the activities and efforts of the Red Cross were shifted to a regional jurisdiction with offices in Marshalltown.
