Background Note: On June 18, 1919, John MacVicar acknowledged the receipt of the application and fees from B.J. Carney, which would lead to the of establishment of the Grinnell post of the American Legion. The first meeting was held in the assembly room of the Grinnell Savings Bank on July 10, 1919 with an initial membership of 116. The organization later changed its name to Focht-Tennant post in honor of the two Grinnell men killed in WWI.

The organization was active in supporting the Salvation Army, promoting entertainment and cultural and theatrical programs, and planning events in observation of national holidays. In 1922, the post was instrumental in the organization of the American Legion Auxiliary (collection #168)

The collection consists primarily of correspondence and documentation for various programs and events sponsored by the post.
