Background Note: The Focht-Tennant Post of the American Legion was founded in 1919, with the initial meeting on July 10. The post was named for William J. Focht and George Tennant, 2 Grinnell men who lost their lives in France during WWI. In 1922, the formation of a Women’s Auxiliary Unit was proposed and accepted; the preliminary meeting was attended by 80 women.
Over the years, the Women’s Auxiliary has engaged in the annual poppy sale, with proceeds going to aid in the rehabilitation of veterans and to support programs for children and youth, and has sponsored a delegate at Girls’ State in Des Moines. Members have given Halloween and Christmas parties for children in the community and provided books and materials for Iowa Veterans’ Homes. They annually sponsor the Goodfellows’ effort, which provides food baskets for underprivileged residents of Grinnell.
