Background Note: C.W.H. Beyer initially engaged in banking in Grinnell in 1881 and in 1883 formed the firm of C.W.H. Beyer & Co., a real-estate and farm loan business. In 1908 the firm opened a banking business in the Beyer Block, which continued until 1919, when Citizens National Bank took over the banking part of the business. The farm loan/mortgage business, which operated in most of the states of the Midwest, continued under the direction of Harold Beyer following Charles Beyer’s death in 1922.
The (incomplete) records in the collection were found on the second floor of the Beyer Block and consist of invoices, statements, and correspondence, primarily from the period 1921-1932, as well as three ledgers, one of which documents loans made in 1901-1918. Correspondence from the early 1930s illustrates the impact of the Depression on the farm economy.
