Title
Pioneer Record of Iowa, Poweshiek County (Porter Genealogy Scrapbook)
Date(s)
- Compiled 1939 (Creation)
Extent
Dates: compiled 1939 (1933?)
Quantity: 1 – 10 ½ x 13 blue-gray box
1 – 14 x 18 x 1 blue-gray box
Arrangement: Generally alphabetical, with index created in June, 2019. A working copy was made of this fragile scrapbook, clipped together in two sections, and supplemental clippings were copied to create a working supplement with its own page numbers. Both copies are on archival paper.
Background Note: The record consists of a scrapbook of clippings from the newspaper genealogy column by Mrs. F.R. Porter, which drew from three histories of Poweshiek County and aimed to publish data on the early pioneers of the county and their descendants. Pioneers were considered to be all those who lived in the state prior to 1868 and at some time lived in the county. The column, published in the newspaper 1939 -1950, also references obituary notices beginning in 1932. Olive Korns Porter compiled the scrapbook, apparently for the D.A.R., with the year “1933” on the title page. A collection of separate column clippings in an envelope form the “supplement,” which almost entirely duplicates the scrapbook holdings.
