Background Note: Pi Rho Lambda evolved from the Woman’s Club of Grinnell, which was established in 1921 as part of a community effort to raise funds for Grinnell College. In 1924 a number of members formed an independent group, using the Greek letters, pi, rho, and lambda, to represent their program objectives, Philanthropy, Recreation, and Literature. Membership was limited to 22 women, and meetings were held on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month.

Programs have featured music, skits, poetry, fashion shows, book reviews, and outside speakers. The oldest continuing custom is the May Breakfast, which was first held in 1927 and became the annual Meeting. The Christmas Party was first held in 1928 and the Valentine Party, which includes husbands, in 1930. Charitable efforts have focused on local hospitals, the city nursing program and the Goodfellows Christmas campaign.
