Biographical history

Leonard Fletcher Parker was a professor of Greek and Latin at Grinnell College from 1860-70 and of History from 1888-98. In the interim he taught at the University of Iowa. Parker was involved with the public schools, with the Underground Railroad, and with many aspects of life in the Grinnell area. He died in 1911 after the publication of his last book, History of Poweshiek County.

The collection contains “historical manuscripts, notes and correspondence of Professor L.F. Parker in regard to material for his History of Poweshiek County.  Most materials are handwritten, although a few of Parker’s manuscripts are typed.

Donated to Archives by Lois Meacham, Grinnell Historical Museum, April 1999.  The papers had been donated to the Museum by L.B. Watt in 1959.  Watt was the owner of the Grinnell Herald-Register as was the previous owner of these papers, W.G. Ray.
