John Kleinschmidt Collection of Grinnell Local History

Professor Kleinschmidt amassed countless photocopies, copies of microfilm and Sanborn maps, copies of newspaper articles, correspondence, and black and white photographs of local buildings (residences, commercial, college).  In the 1990s, Professor Kleinschmidt expressed his interest in having his collection deposited with the Grinnell College Archives.  Members of the Grinnell Historic Preservation Commission (Lisa Adkins, Don Irving, Cheryl Neubert), conducted interviews with him to access much of his accumulated knowledge about this history of the town, the occupants and the buildings.

Grinnell College Libraries' Department of Special Collections offers public access to the images in this collection to facilitate research and education. While many of the images are in the public domain, there may be some materials that are currently under copyright. Use of these materials beyond that allowed under the fair use provision of the copyright law requires written permission of the copyright owner. The researcher assumes all responsibility for clearing reproduction rights and for any violation or infringement of the U. S. Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S.C.).

Grinnell College Libraries does not own the copyright in these images and therefore cannot give or deny permission to publish or distribute any of them. It is the researcher's responsibility to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or distributing material from this collection.

Any materials used must carry a credit line: Kleinschmidt Collection of Grinnell Architecture, Special Collections and Archives, Grinnell College Libraries. Due to the nature of historical archival collections, staff are not always able to identify copyright holders of individual images. Grinnell College Libraries Department of Special Collections is eager to hear from any copyright owners who are not properly identified so that accurate information may be provided in the future.
