Extent

Background Note: The collection is composed of two donations. The first, a series of photographs and memorabilia, was acquired at auction, and the second, which consists of papers, documentation for Grinnell businesses, and miscellaneous newspapers, was associated with Paul Worcester. Both pertain to the Hyde, Parmenter, and Worcester families.

George F. Hyde, a native of Scott County, Iowa, moved to Poweshiek County with his wife, Nancy, and four children in 1891, where he raised grain and dairy cattle.

George D. Parmenter, a native of Illinois, was a student at the University of Iowa, and taught school before coming to Iowa to farm near Gilman. He and his wife, Lydia, were the parents of five children. In 1893 they moved to a smaller farm west of Grinnell, where they lived until moving to their home at 1228 Main St. in 1902

Justus Worcester, patriarch of the Worcester family, was born in Tewksbury Massachusetts in 1821 and moved with his wife and family of 8 children to a farm in Marshall County in 1854. He died in December 1882, the year in which his house was destroyed in the cyclone and rebuilt.

A family tree included in Folder #1 indicates the relationships between these three families. In addition, a list of those who can be identified in the photographs is included in Box #2.
