Background Note: The collection documents the history of the Hays family from the beginning of their daughter Allene’s high school years in Grinnell. Max Hays retailed natural gas and was part owner of Norris & Hays, 925 Broad, appliance dealers. Both Max and Irene were active in the Grange and in 1963 were awarded the Degree of Ceres at the 96th Annual Session of the National Grange

Allene Mary Roberta Hays graduated from Grinnell High School in1958 and subsequently attended the University of Iowa where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and in the Scottish Highlanders, a pipe, drum, and dance group. She graduated from Iowa with honors in 1962. She moved to Colorado after marrying William Brobst; the couple had two children, Laurie and Steven, during the period documented by the scrapbooks.

The first six scrapbooks contain memorabilia from Allene’s high school years. Scrapbook 1961-2 covers her final year at the U of Iowa. Scrapbooks 1962-3 and 1970 deal more with the interests of Max and Irene Hays, their life in Grinnell and activities in the Grange, although correspondence from their daughter and grand children is included. The 1970 volume contains information about the Hays Family Reunion and a series of old family photographs.
