Background Note: Grinnell Productions was founded in 1994 as an arts organization dedicated to the presentation of theatre productions, drama workshops, educational programs, and the creation of a center for the arts.

In 1996, Grinnell Productions, under the leadership of Pip Gordon, Managing Director, purchased two adjacent buildings in order to form the Commercial Street Arts Center and Davis Playhouse, with plans to create a 200-seat playhouse, art gallery, rehearsal rooms, scenery and costume studios, and workshop space. Educational ventures included the Arts Cooperative, an after-school and community program involving workshops in theatre, dance, music, and the visual arts and a high school
drama workshop. In August 2000 Grinnell Productions received a gift of $400,000 toward the completion of this project from the estate of the late B.G. “Babe” Voertman.

In September 2002, the Board of Directors notified donors and patrons that the renovation of the property could not be pursued. The bequest from the Voertman estate was used to upgrade the Grinnell Community Center Theatre and to purchase and install a fly system for the new high school auditorium.
