Background: In 1895 Father McManus purchased a small plot of ground at the southwest corner of Hazelwood Cemetery from the I.O.O.F Lodge of Grinnell. This plot was named Calvary Cemetery and was to be used for the burial of the Catholics of this area. There are twenty Sisters and one priest buried in Calvary Cemetery, along with other deceased Catholics.

Most of the Sisters buried in Calvary Cemetery belonged to the order of the Sisters of St. Francis of Clinton, Iowa and served either at St. Francis Hospital in Grinnell or at the St. John School in Victor, Iowa.
