General note
Grinnell College Foundation incorporated under laws of the State of Iowa November 10, 1913, and held its first meeting January 2, 1914. The purpose of the Foundation, according to the Articles of Incorporation, was to assist Grinnell College in carrying forward its educational work by: 1) providing additional educational equipment; 2) providing endowment funds; 3) establishing scholarships; 4) erecting and maintaining dormitories.
The Foundation was managed by twelve directors of which seven had to be Trustees of Iowa College. The President of the College served as President of the Foundation. The first business of the Foundation was construction of the women's dormitories. Foundation minutes of a meeting in 1952 suggest that after a number (12?) of years of no meetings, no assets, and no business transactions, the Foundation ceased to exist about 1954.
The college deeded some of its real estate holdings to the Foundation to use as a source of credit to issue and sell bonds to build dormitories. The Foundation managed the real estate, sold some, and later deeded the remaining holding back to the College. The Foundation leased the dormitories to the College at a rental sufficient to repay the bonds. Details of the arrangement are in ta report of the Foundation Treasure to the General Education board in 1930 (RG-T Ser. 3.4).
