Arrangement: Records are broadly grouped chronologically by date of war, with names in alphabetical order within each group. For optimal use of box space, some early wars are grouped with later wars. See each box description (below) for contents.

Note: As of this date, Civil War records have been digitized through the Poweshiek History Preservation Project and are staff-accessible in DCL’s Staff Documents, Digital Archives, file “Grave Registration Records of the Armed Forces (Coll #267).” The remainder will be digitized when the necessary scanning equipment becomes available.

Background Note: These Armed Forces Grave Registration Records, produced by the Soldiers Relief Commission, were kept by the Poweshiek County Veterans Affairs Office in Grinnell. Each set of records, titled by war name, was originally contained with prong fasteners at the top, and the title page on each set stated, “Property of Poweshiek County Soldiers Relief Commission.”

Grave records with death dates and other information (when known) for Poweshiek County soldiers and veterans are available for the following wars: War of 1812; Mexican War (aka. Mexican American War, 1846-48); Civil War; Spanish-American War (1898); WWI; WWII; Korean War (1950-1953); Vietnam War (1955-1975); and Persian Gulf War (1990-1991). A few records had other items, such as an obituary, stapled to them. Copies of these items were made and are clipped to their original records.
