Background Note:
George Drake (1934 – 2022) graduated Grinnell College in 1956, later becoming a Professor of History and member of the Grinnell College Board of Trustees. He served as the tenth President of Grinnell College and first alumnus president from 1979 – 1991. Together with his wife Susan Ratcliff Drake ’58, who worked in the children’s department of Stewart Library, the two campaigned to raise funds for a new public library to be built in Grinnell. The resulting Drake Community Library opened in 2009 and was named in honor of the Drakes.
