Background Note: In March 2000 Deb Calderwood, Director of Grinnell 2000, met with Grinnell students to begin planning for a youth center to provide a safe and innovative space for young people to enjoy a variety of educational, recreational, and social activities. While the facility was to provide services to K-12 students, the primary focus was on
youth in grades 7-12.
In May 2001, following planning, fundraising, and construction, the Galaxy opened in the lower part of the Postels building on Commercial Street and has continued to provide entertainment, educational activities, and programs in leadership and self-esteem development’
The Galaxy closed in December 2015 due to unmet financial needs.
