Background Note: Ethel Mary Treat Stewart was born in Falmouth ME on August 22, 1869 and moved to Grinnell with her family in 1874. In 1890 she was married to William Stewart. The couple had two daughters: Mildred (b. October 1, 1890; d. January 25, 1971) and Helen, ( b. January 17, 1892; d. September 10, 1973). Ethel Stewart died on January 8, 1973 at the age of 103. Both Mildred and Helen Stewart became librarians and are associated with the scholarship given annually to a Grinnell High School student. Correspondence included in the Box #2, Folder #4 indicates that many of the original materials were sent to the Border Historical Society in Maine in 1974.
